President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed the official launch of Lebara Nigeria, describing the move as a strong endorsement of Nigeria’s digital economy and investment climate.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the President said the entry of the UK-backed telecom operator reflects growing international confidence in Nigeria as a leading technology and innovation hub in Africa.
Telecom Sector Driving Nigeria’s GDP Growth
Tinubu emphasized that the telecommunications sector remains a key economic driver.
According to him, the industry recorded a 5.78 percent year-on-year growth in the third quarter of 2025 and contributes over 14 percent to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product.
He noted that investments in telecom infrastructure are critical for expanding broadband access, deepening financial inclusion, accelerating digital transformation, and supporting economic diversification.
UK-Nigeria Economic Ties Strengthened
The President acknowledged the presence of the British High Commission at the Lagos launch event, describing it as a sign of enduring diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The event was held in partnership with the UK’s Department for Business and Trade.
Tinubu also commended Lebara Nigeria’s leadership, including Chief Executive Officer Teniola Stuffman, for advancing inclusive, affordable, and globally connected digital services for Nigerians.
Boost for Jobs, Youth Empowerment, and Innovation
Lebara Nigeria recently secured its dedicated 0724 number series and completed full interconnectivity with major mobile network operators ahead of commercial rollout.
The company says its entry into Africa’s largest telecom market is driven by the need to deliver affordable digital access to millions.
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining a stable, transparent, and investment-friendly environment that supports private enterprise, job creation, youth empowerment, and Nigeria’s long-term digital economy growth.
