Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun Mourns Former SSG, Babatunde Osokoya

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Head of Service, Babatunde Osokoya, describing it as a significant loss to the state.

Osokoya, a respected elder statesman from Omu-Ijebu, died on Sunday at the age of 81 after a brief illness at a private hospital in Abeokuta, Ogun State’s capital.

Until his passing, Osokoya remained actively engaged in public affairs and recently participated in events commemorating Ogun State’s 50th anniversary, highlighting his lifelong commitment to the state.

In a statement on Monday, Governor Abiodun, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, said the news of Osokoya’s death “left him deeply shaken.”

He recalled the former administrator’s vibrant presence during the golden jubilee celebrations.

“It is profoundly shocking that Omoba Albertson Babatunde Osokoya, mni, who joined us during the thanksgiving service and anniversary banquet, is no longer with us. We are, however, grateful to God for the impactful life he lived and the enduring legacy he leaves behind,” the governor stated.

Governor Abiodun praised Osokoya as a rare public servant whose dedication, integrity, and professionalism helped shape Ogun State’s civil service. Over his career, he served in several key positions, including Permanent Secretary, pioneer Chief of Staff to the Governor, Secretary to the State Government, and Head of Service, strengthening governance and institutional stability in the state.

Even after retirement, Osokoya’s influence continued as Chairman of the Ogun State Civil Service Commission, where he championed merit-based recruitment, capacity building, and the development of civil service standards.

“His leadership raised standards within the public service and produced officers who continue to serve with excellence today,” Abiodun added.

Osokoya also demonstrated unwavering support for retired civil servants through his leadership of the Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries in Ogun State.

Reflecting on his career, Governor Abiodun noted that Osokoya became a Permanent Secretary at 35 and later SSG and Head of Service at 49, positions he held until his retirement in 1996. He later served as Chairman of the Civil Service Commission from 2003 to 2011, further cementing his legacy.

Beyond government service, Osokoya was celebrated as a philanthropist, mentor, and supporter of youth development, particularly in football, where he helped nurture young talent across Ogun State.

Governor Abiodun extended heartfelt condolences to the Osokoya family, the civil service community, and the people of Ogun State, praying for the peaceful repose of the departed statesman’s soul.
