The Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Aviation have ordered a full investigation into the fire outbreak at the Terminal 1 wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, describing the incident as a serious setback to aviation safety and infrastructure.
During an on-the-spot assessment, lawmakers toured the damaged sections of the airport and held a closed-door meeting with officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
The delegation said it would await the outcome of ongoing investigations before drawing conclusions about the cause of the Lagos airport fire.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Abdulfatai Buhari, emphasized that the National Assembly would not speculate while investigations remain active.
He noted that despite the scale of destruction, no lives were lost — a development he described as the most important outcome.
Emergency response efforts were widely commended. Over 150 firefighters reportedly battled the blaze, stabilizing operations within hours.
Flight diversions were promptly arranged, including rerouting services to Malabo and Accra, while some international carriers resumed landing before midnight, minimizing disruption at Nigeria’s busiest airport.
Also speaking, the Chairman of FAAN’s Board, Abdullahi Ganduje, praised airport management for swift crisis management but expressed concern over the destruction of sensitive aviation equipment belonging to agencies such as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.
According to FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, emergency protocols were activated immediately after the fire outbreak, ensuring passenger safety and continuity of airport operations.
The Senate probe into the Lagos airport terminal fire is expected to examine safety compliance, infrastructure resilience, and possible technical or security lapses.
Lawmakers assured Nigerians that findings from the investigation would guide any necessary legislative or regulatory action to strengthen airport safety nationwide.
