National News – No fewer than 49 people have been killed following a wave of coordinated bandit attacks in Kebbi and Kwara states, with security forces later eliminating 10 suspected terrorists during a military operation in Plateau State.
The recent violence has deepened concerns over escalating insecurity in rural communities and exposed the persistent threat posed by armed groups across northern Nigeria.
In Kebbi State, 44 residents were killed when gunmen launched simultaneous attacks on multiple communities in Shanga Local Government Area.
The assailants invaded several villages, leaving behind a trail of destruction, casualties, and displaced families.
Security authorities confirmed the scale of the attack and said additional personnel had been deployed to restore order, intensify surveillance, and pursue fleeing attackers.
Police also reported the recovery of weapons during clearance operations.
In Kwara State, five forest guards were killed during a pre-dawn assault on Nuku village in Kaiama Local Government Area.
The attackers reportedly targeted a Police Mobile Force base, opening fire on security personnel and damaging operational vehicles before being repelled.
Authorities described the slain forest guards as heroes who died while protecting their communities.
The state government has announced the creation of a security strategy committee tasked with strengthening intelligence gathering, coordinating security responses, and safeguarding vulnerable communities.
Meanwhile, in Plateau State, troops engaged suspected terrorists during a coordinated operation in Wase and Kanam local government areas.
The offensive resulted in the killing of 10 armed fighters, while weapons, ammunition, motorcycles, and logistical supplies were recovered.
Military sources confirmed that the operation disrupted criminal networks operating within forested corridors frequently used by armed groups.
Residents in affected areas have expressed relief over recent security operations but remain fearful of further attacks.
Community members continue to appeal for sustained security presence to deter future violence, particularly as farming activities intensify in the coming months.
Security agencies have urged citizens to remain alert, report suspicious movements, and cooperate with ongoing operations aimed at restoring peace and stability in affected regions.
