National News – The South African government has dismissed as false reports circulating on social media claiming that members of the public would receive financial rewards for reporting undocumented foreign nationals.
In a statement issued through its official X account on Sunday, the Department of Home Affairs described the widely shared notice as fraudulent, stressing that it did not originate from the department.
“The notice currently circulating is fraudulent and did not originate from the Department of Home Affairs. Neither the Department nor the Minister of Home Affairs offers monetary rewards to members of the public for reporting undocumented foreign nationals,” the statement said.
The department urged citizens to rely only on official communication channels for verified information, warning that the spread of misinformation could further inflame tensions.
“We encourage the public to verify information through official channels before sharing it. Let us all play our part in promoting accurate information, responsible engagement and respect for the rule of law,” it added.
The clarification comes amid heightened anti-foreigner sentiments and xenophobic attacks in parts of South Africa, where migrants from several African countries, including Nigerians, have reportedly come under attack.
The Nigerian government has since commenced arrangements to evacuate willing citizens affected by the unrest. Hundreds of Nigerians are said to have registered for voluntary repatriation, citing the loss of their homes, businesses and livelihoods.
While expressing concern over the attacks, the Federal Government has continued to engage South African authorities through diplomatic channels in a bid to ensure the safety of Nigerians living in the country.
