Nigeria’s Music Streaming Soars 163.5% in Five Years – Spotify

Nigeria has cemented its position as a global music streaming hub, with Spotify revealing that music streaming in the country has grown by 163.5% over five years.

The platform credits this surge to the country’s vibrant music culture and increasing digital adoption.

Since its launch in Nigeria in February 2021, Spotify reported triple-digit year-on-year growth, maintaining strong momentum through 2025.

At the core of this growth is Afrobeats, which saw a 5,022% increase in local streams between 2021 and 2025. Other genres experienced massive expansion: Amapiano (+10,330%), Gospel & Praise (+5,499%), Hip-hop & Rap (+3,020%), and R&B (+2,602%).

Language diversity has also boosted streaming. Indigenous-language listening in Nigeria grew 554% in 2024 and 87% in 2025, while global indigenous-language streams increased 141% in 2024 and 41% in 2025, highlighting international interest in local sounds.

Spotify’s insights reflect a young, discovery-driven audience. The first track streamed in Nigeria was “到此為止” by Shiga Lin, showing eclectic tastes.

Users have created over 25 million playlists, and in 2025 alone, Nigeria recorded more than 1.4 million play hours.

Top Nigerian artists dominating streams include Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, Wizkid, and Seyi Vibez, with hits like Asake’s Remember and Lonely At The Top, Wizkid’s Kese (Dance), Seyi Vibez’s Doha, and Davido’s With You featuring Omah Lay.

Podcast consumption is also rising, with over 59 billion hours streamed since Spotify’s launch. The average Nigerian listener is 26 years old and streams music from around 150 different artists, showing a market that values exploration and variety.

Spotify’s report underscores Nigeria’s emergence as a global music streaming powerhouse, driven by local genres, diverse content, and a tech-savvy, adventurous audience.
