National News – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially postponed the nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made following a high-level meeting between the commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners, where key issues regarding electoral preparations were discussed and reviewed.

According to INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, the voter revalidation exercise, earlier scheduled to commence on April 13, 2026, has now been moved to a later date after the general elections.

The commission said the exercise remains crucial for strengthening the credibility of the National Register of Voters by eliminating duplicate records, correcting voter information, and removing ineligible entries.

In a letter dated April 4 and signed by INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony, all Resident Electoral Commissioners were directed to halt publicity and preparations for the exercise.

The directive also paused the procurement and deployment of INEC Voter Enrolment Devices, as well as the recruitment and training of personnel required for the project.

INEC emphasized that the postponement does not diminish its commitment to conducting credible, transparent, and inclusive elections.

The commission assured Nigerians that the revalidation exercise will still take place after the 2027 elections to improve the integrity of the voter database and allow citizens to update their records.

The commission expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a transparent electoral process.
