National News – The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has formally taken control of the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
The development followed the unsealing of the party’s headquarters by the Nigeria Police Force in compliance with a court order.
The faction led by National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed confirmed the takeover in a statement issued on Saturday.
According to the party’s National Working Committee, both the Wadata Plaza headquarters and the Legacy House in Maitama were reopened by the police and handed over to the Mohammed-led leadership.
The PDP has been battling internal crisis for months, resulting in factional clashes and leadership disputes.
The tension escalated in November when rival groups laid claim to the party’s leadership, leading to a breakdown of order at the secretariat.
The rival faction was supported by some state governors, including Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed.
However, the Court of Appeal recently delivered a ruling that overturned the controversial Ibadan convention held on November 16, which had been backed by the opposing faction.
The ruling effectively strengthened the position of the Wike-aligned group and paved the way for the reopening of the secretariat under their control.
In its statement, the Mohammed-led faction commended the police for maintaining professionalism and ensuring respect for due process.
The group also warned that it would not tolerate any attempt to disrupt peace or cause disorder at the party’s headquarters going forward.
The leadership expressed appreciation to party stakeholders and specifically acknowledged the role of Nyesom Wike, describing his guidance and support as critical in stabilising the party.
The statement further urged aggrieved members to embrace reconciliation and unity in the interest of the PDP’s future.
The takeover marks a significant shift in the party’s internal dynamics as preparations continue ahead of future political engagements.
