A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State, Ben Obi, popularly known as Igwe APGA, has urged Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo to remove non-performing commissioners and political advisers as he prepares to begin his second term in office.
Obi alleged that more than 80 per cent of Soludo’s current cabinet has failed to meet performance expectations, warning that retaining them beyond March 17, 2026, would amount to institutionalising mediocrity in government.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, the APGA stalwart also called for the disqualification of all incumbent local government chairmen and councillors ahead of the August 29 Anambra local government elections, citing widespread underperformance at the grassroots level.
“As the governor prepares to commence his second term on March 17, he should sack non-performing commissioners and advisers, who constitute over 80 per cent of his cabinet,” Obi said.
He stressed that Anambra State and APGA have no shortage of competent individuals capable of delivering results, noting that replacing underperforming officials would inject fresh ideas and improve governance outcomes.
According to him, several local government chairmen have publicly complained about gaining nothing from their positions, a situation he described as unacceptable and damaging to public trust.
“Allowing failed local government chairmen to continue in office is to enthrone mediocrity. Fresh hands with new ideas will enhance productivity and strengthen the ‘Solution Government’,” he added.
Obi further emphasised the need for proper training and clear guidelines for APGA screening panels across all 21 local government areas to ensure that only qualified and loyal party members emerge as chairmanship and councillorship candidates.
He also urged Governor Soludo, the APGA National Chairman, the Anambra State APGA Chairman, and the governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Dr Alex Obiogbolu, to take his recommendations seriously.
“Government is about the enthronement of meritocracy, not mediocrity,” Obi concluded.
