Troops of Sector 1 under Operation Whirl Stroke successfully thwarted a kidnapping attempt along the Enugu–Otukpo Road, rescuing three victims.
The operation was confirmed on February 27, 2026, by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE.
The incident occurred on February 25, when intelligence indicated that an 18-seater Benue Links bus with registration number TYK 221 YK, carrying four passengers and a minor, had been seized by suspected kidnappers.
Acting swiftly, troops deployed from the Forward Operation Base in Otukpo trailed the kidnappers along their withdrawal route.
“The rapid response forced the criminals to abandon three victims,” the statement read, noting that no direct contact occurred during the pursuit.
Troops also recovered a mobile phone believed to belong to the kidnappers, which could aid further investigations.
The Force Commander praised the soldiers for their resilience, vigilance, and operational efficiency, emphasizing the importance of prompt action in preventing what could have escalated into a major security breach.
He urged motorists to remain alert while travelling, advising them to observe unusual absences of vehicular movement within a two-kilometre stretch, pause to assess situations when necessary, and report suspicious activities to nearby security outposts.
This rescue comes just a week after the Joint Task Force South-East saved five travellers along the 9th Mile axis in Enugu.
In that operation, troops engaged armed assailants with superior tactics and firepower, forcing the kidnappers to release their captives unharmed.
Security experts note that prompt intelligence-led military interventions are critical in curbing kidnappings along vulnerable routes in southeastern Nigeria.
Travelers are encouraged to remain cautious, maintain communication, and report threats immediately to prevent potential attacks.
The Nigerian Army continues to demonstrate its commitment to protecting road users and ensuring public safety along major highways.
