The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Bemgha Koughna, has reaffirmed the military’s commitment to stronger collaboration with journalists in Sokoto State to enhance security operations and build public confidence.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by executives of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, at the Division’s headquarters in Sokoto, the GOC stressed the importance of effective media engagement in countering misinformation and sustaining peace.
Major General Koughna noted that accurate and timely dissemination of security information remains critical in shaping public understanding of military operations.
He apologised for the delay in hosting the journalists, attributing it to operational demands since assuming office.
“I assure you that this Division, under my leadership, is ready to build a strong working relationship with journalists, especially the Correspondents’ Chapel,” he said, pledging open communication and professional cooperation.
Earlier, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Ankeli Emmanuel, congratulated the GOC on his appointment and expressed the chapel’s readiness to partner with the Army in promoting a safer society.
He called for prompt access to verified information to ensure balanced, factual, and responsible reporting of military activities.
Emmanuel also urged the Division to consistently invite journalists to official programmes to guarantee comprehensive media coverage and strengthen transparency.
The renewed engagement underscores ongoing efforts to reinforce civil-military relations in Sokoto State.
Observers say improved collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the media will not only enhance public trust but also support coordinated responses to security challenges in the region.
