Atalanta head coach Raffaele Palladino has publicly wished Ademola Lookman well following his high-profile transfer to Atletico Madrid, describing the move as a natural part of modern football.
The Nigeria international completed a €40 million switch to the Spanish capital, just days after Atalanta president Luca Percassi insisted the forward was not for sale, despite Napoli’s reported interest.
Palladino praised Lookman’s professionalism while acknowledging his career ambitions.
“It’s a dynamic that’s part of today’s football,” the 41-year-old said to Tutto Atalanta.
“Lookman made this important request and chose Atletico Madrid. We respect his decision and thank him for his contribution. We now focus on the strong squad we have and aim to continue to impress.”
At Atletico Madrid, manager Diego Simeone welcomed Lookman warmly, highlighting the winger’s qualities and potential impact on the squad. The 28-year-old, who was named 2024 African Player of the Year, joined the club on a four-year deal and trained immediately with winter signings Rodri Mendoza and Obed Vargas.
“Three key players arrived, and we’ll work together to finish the season strongly,” Simeone said via Spidy Atletico.
“Lookman integrated quickly. His speed, physical strength, playmaking ability, and finishing in the final third stood out immediately. We hope he contributes as we expect and builds crucial partnerships on the pitch.”
Upon his official unveiling, Lookman was given the number 22 shirt and expressed excitement about the new chapter in his career.
“Proud and excited to start this new chapter. Joining Atletico de Madrid, a club with rich history and passion, is a dream. New city, new challenges, new energy. I’m ready to give everything on the pitch. Let’s get to work, Aupa,” Lookman posted on X.
The transfer concludes a successful stint in Serie A, where Lookman scored 55 goals and provided 27 assists in 137 appearances for Atalanta over three-and-a-half seasons, cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s rising wingers.
