CJN Urges Evidence-Based Criticism to Protect Judiciary

Abuja, Nigeria – The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has called for evidence-based criticism of the judiciary, warning that sweeping allegations of corruption could erode public confidence and weaken the rule of law.

She spoke at the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed Federal High Court judges at the Supreme Court Complex in Abuja, emphasizing fairness, accountability, and integrity in public discourse about the courts.

“While constructive criticism is legitimate in a constitutional democracy, blanket denunciations are neither fair nor responsible. Such sweeping generalisations wound deeply,” she said, noting that unfounded allegations unjustly tarnish the reputations of judges who have served honorably for decades.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) had recommended 14 candidates for appointment by President Bola Tinubu, following thorough security clearance. Kekere-Ekun described the selection as one of the most rigorous and transparent in recent history.

“For the first time, shortlisted candidates’ names were published publicly, and citizens were invited to comment on their integrity and suitability. Transparency in judicial appointments strengthens public confidence in the courts,” she said.

The CJN stressed that allegations must be specific and evidence-based. Reckless claims damage not only individuals but the judiciary as a whole. She reaffirmed that verified misconduct will be addressed firmly and transparently, safeguarding institutional integrity.

Kekere-Ekun urged the new judges to uphold discipline, integrity, and principled courage, especially as the Federal High Court increasingly handles complex cases in banking, revenue, maritime, and intellectual property law.

“Judicial independence must be protected from careless assault. Public confidence in the courts underpins the rule of law itself,” she concluded, charging judges to approach every case with thorough preparation and integrity.
