National News – The Down Syndrome Foundation of Nigeria organised its 19th annual inter-house sports competition in Lagos, using the event to promote social inclusion and confidence among children and young adults living with Down syndrome.

The colourful sporting gathering took place at the Campos Memorial Mini Stadium on Lagos Island and brought together students, families, caregivers and corporate supporters in a celebration of ability, participation and awareness.

The competition also marked a milestone for the organisation as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.

For the foundation, the annual sports event is more than just games; it is a platform to challenge misconceptions and demonstrate that individuals with Down syndrome can live active and meaningful lives when given proper support and opportunities.

President and founder of the foundation, Rose Mordi, said people living with Down syndrome have often faced neglect and social exclusion.

She explained that engaging them in activities like sports helps build their confidence, encourages social interaction and strengthens their sense of belonging in society.

According to her, the foundation has spent nearly two decades using sports and community programmes to empower children with intellectual disabilities while also supporting their families and caregivers.

School administrator Chaota Hassan described the sports competition as an important awareness campaign.

She said the event highlights the potential of children with Down syndrome and helps educate the public that the condition does not prevent individuals from living independent and fulfilling lives.

Parents also expressed excitement about the initiative.

The Parent-Teacher Association chairman, Oluwabunmi Sosina, noted that the sports event allows the children to feel accepted and appreciated.

She added that every child deserves encouragement and opportunities to grow regardless of their challenges.

Corporate organisations also supported the programme. Representatives from Linkage Assurance and NSIA Insurance explained that their long-standing partnership with the foundation reflects their commitment to community support and social responsibility.

At the end of the competition, the Blue House sponsored by First Bank of Nigeria emerged overall winner with five gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

The Green House finished second, Red House placed third, while Yellow House came fourth.
