Edo State Declares Lassa Fever Outbreak, Urges Immediate Action

Benin City, Edo State – February 13, 2026 – The Edo State Government has confirmed a Lassa Fever outbreak after six people lost their lives, prompting calls for urgent, coordinated action to curb the spread.

Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, Edo State Commissioner for Health, reported 28 laboratory-confirmed cases across the state, with recent spikes in Estako West and Esan West Local Government Areas, signaling ongoing community transmission.

“Following a careful epidemiological review and risk assessment, we formally declare a Lassa Fever outbreak in Edo State,” said Dr. Oshiomhole. “Immediate, coordinated, and escalated interventions are required to protect public health.”

The state has proactively provided Lassa Fever treatment packs to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) and activated all pillars of the Edo State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre. The response will be coordinated under the Director of Public Health, with daily situation reports submitted to the Commissioner.

Authorities stressed that residents should remain vigilant while the government intensifies measures to contain the disease and prevent further fatalities.
