National News – Eight members of the House of Representatives from Kano State have officially defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement was made on Tuesday during plenary, presided over by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas.
Each lawmaker submitted a letter on the floor of the House explaining that persistent internal crises within the NNPP influenced their decision to switch parties.
The defection ceremony was attended by key political figures, including Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and former Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
The lawmakers’ move highlights shifting political alliances in Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections, signaling a potential strengthening of the APC in the region.
Observers say the defections could impact party dynamics both in the House of Representatives and within Kano State politics at large.
The lawmakers, whose names were formally read in plenary, expressed a desire to work in a more stable political environment.
They cited unresolved leadership disputes and organizational challenges within the NNPP as major factors for their exit.
Political analysts note that such defections are becoming increasingly common in Nigeria’s multi-party system, where internal party cohesion often influences legislators’ decisions.
The event drew attention from media outlets and political commentators nationwide, as Kano has historically been a battleground state in national elections.
Stakeholders have called for continued dialogue among political parties to prevent further unrest and ensure a smooth political transition in the coming months.
The eight lawmakers are expected to fully integrate into APC structures and contribute to the party’s legislative agenda.
The development underscores the fluidity of Nigeria’s political landscape and the strategic calculations politicians make in preparation for upcoming electoral cycles.
