Ekiti Man Dies by Suicide After Allegedly Attempting to Kill 12-Year-Old Daughter

The Ekiti State Police Command has launched a full investigation into a disturbing incident in which a middle-aged man allegedly attempted to kill his daughter before taking his own life in Ise Ekiti, Ise/Orun Local Government Area of the state.

The man, identified simply as Segun, was reportedly found hanging from a tree behind his residence in the early hours of Sunday. Sources disclosed that he had earlier attacked his elder daughter, said to be about 12 years old, before committing suicide.

A resident of the community, Mr Patrick Abayomi, said the tragic discovery drew shocked neighbours to the scene after they were alerted by distress noises coming from the house.

According to him, residents arrived to find the man’s lifeless body dangling from a tree, while the injured girl was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

“The girl was taken to the hospital on time, and we were told she is responding to treatment,” Abayomi said.

He added that efforts were underway by community members to make arrangements for the removal of the body, in line with local customs.

Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the incident as deeply troubling and raised concerns about the mental state of the deceased.

“This development raises serious questions about the man’s sanity,” the source said, while expressing relief that the child survived the attack.

Reacting to the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Command, Superintendent Sunday Abutu, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, had ordered a thorough investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Abutu said in a text message.

Police assured the public that further details would be made available as investigations progress.
