Voters at the Durumi II Polling Unit in the Abuja Municipal Area Council have expressed frustration over alleged voter register omission and poor coordination during Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election.
Although there was an impressive turnout of residents eager to cast their ballots, several prospective voters said they could not find their names on the voter register pasted on the wall for verification. The development triggered concerns about possible voter disenfranchisement in the ongoing council poll.
Voter Register Omission Sparks Outrage
Checks at the polling unit indicated that names beginning with the letters C, E, H, and I were missing from the displayed register. A further verification confirmed that entries under those alphabetical categories were not visible, leaving many affected voters stranded.
One of the affected voters, Chidi Uchechi, said he was shocked when he could not locate his name.
“I didn’t see my name there. Names beginning with C aren’t on the register pasted here,” he said.
Another voter alleged that the omission raised questions about the transparency of the election process.
“Why will some names be omitted? This looks suspicious and could affect the credibility of the election,” the voter stated.
Complaints Over Poor Coordination
Beyond the issue of missing names, some voters and party agents also complained about what they described as poor election coordination at the polling unit. Heated exchanges reportedly broke out among party representatives over the management of the voting exercise.
Observers noted that resolving voter register discrepancies and improving election management are essential to ensuring a smooth and credible FCT Area Council election. The situation at Durumi II highlights the importance of transparency, efficiency, and proper planning in Nigeria’s electoral process.
