Florida lawmakers have approved a bill to rename Palm Beach International Airport in honour of US President Donald Trump, marking a significant political and symbolic move in the president’s home state.
The Republican-controlled state legislature passed the proposal on Thursday, clearing the way for the airport to be officially renamed “President Donald J. Trump International Airport.” The measure now heads to Governor Ron DeSantis, who is expected to sign it into law despite previously being viewed as a political rival of Trump.
Strategic Location Near Mar-a-Lago
Located in the affluent town of Palm Beach, the airport is just minutes away from Trump’s private estate, Mar-a-Lago. The proximity reinforces Trump’s long-standing ties to the region, which has become a political and personal base for the president.
Before the renaming becomes official, the change must also receive approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees airport naming and federal aviation standards across the country.
Part of Broader Trump Branding Efforts
If finalized, the airport would join a growing list of institutions linked to Trump’s name. In December, the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts voted to adopt the name “Trump-Kennedy Center.”
However, reported attempts to rename landmarks such as Penn Station and Washington Dulles International Airport were unsuccessful.
Separately, the United States Department of the Treasury has confirmed draft discussions around a commemorative $1 coin featuring Trump’s image, despite legal restrictions on depicting a sitting or living president on US currency.
The airport renaming highlights Trump’s continued political influence in Florida and signals the state’s willingness to cement his legacy through high-profile public institutions.
