The Anambra State Government has demolished the Oba shrine of celebrity native doctor Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, following his conviction by a High Court sitting in Awka.

The shrine, located in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, was pulled down by operatives of the state security outfit, Agunechemba.

The demolition was supervised by the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ben Emeakayi.

Items found at the shrine—including native pots, moulded images, clothes, and photographs—were dismantled and later set ablaze.

Justice Jude Obiora of the Anambra State High Court sentenced Nwangwu to 11 months imprisonment over his involvement in ritual practices popularly known as “oke ite” and related offences.

Although initially facing a 10-count charge, six counts were struck out, and he was convicted on the remaining charges.

The court noted that the native doctor had already spent 13 months in detention under the Agunechemba Security Squad.

His two-year concurrent sentence was subsequently reduced to 11 months. He is to serve his term at the Awka Correctional Centre.

As part of the judgment, the court ordered Nwangwu to publicly renounce ritual practices.

He is required to post videos across his social media platforms denouncing “oke ite” and related charms.

The judge further ruled that he must cease all ritual activities permanently and become an ambassador for youth re-orientation upon release.

The crackdown follows Governor Soludo’s signing of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law in 2025, which strengthened security operations and targeted activities allegedly linked to insecurity in the state.

Authorities maintain that the action is part of broader efforts to curb ritual practices, criminal charms, and threats to public safety in Anambra.
