In a significant act of compassion during the holy month of Ramadan, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has granted unconditional pardons to 73 inmates across the state’s correctional facilities.

Each beneficiary received N100,000 to support their reintegration into society, reinforcing the government’s commitment to rehabilitation over punishment.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Mohammed emphasized the importance of mercy and transformation, noting that clemency is not an endorsement of wrongdoing but recognition of genuine remorse and positive conduct.

“Justice preserves order, but mercy restores hope,” he stated, highlighting the constitutional basis of his decision under Section 212 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.

The selection process involved rigorous evaluation, including custodial visits, interviews, medical checks, and behavioral assessments.

Mohammed praised the Bauchi State Attorney-General and Nigerian Correctional Service for their transparency and professionalism.

He urged the pardoned individuals to embrace their new lease on life responsibly. “Today is not merely the end of a sentence; it is the beginning of responsibility.

Society has extended trust to you—do not betray it,” the governor advised. He also called on youths to avoid crime, promoting education, discipline, and enterprise as pathways to success.

Controller of Corrections, Bauchi State Command, Monday Teboh, commended the governor’s humane policies and urged the public to support reintegration.

He warned that societal rejection could push ex-inmates back into criminal activities and stressed the role of religious leaders and families in guiding beneficiaries toward productive lives.

The initiative underscores Bauchi State’s focus on rehabilitation and social reintegration, highlighting that no individual is beyond reform.

By providing financial support and community encouragement, the government aims to foster lasting peace, security, and positive societal contributions.
