The Cross River State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended Dickson Agbor, the lawmaker representing Obubra I State Constituency, over allegations of domestic violence and misconduct.
The decision was reached during Thursday’s plenary session after lawmakers debated a motion condemning the alleged behaviour.
The motion was moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo, who described the reported actions as unacceptable for a public office holder.
Lawmakers argued that the Assembly must uphold ethical standards and maintain the integrity of the legislative institution.
According to Etta, public officials must demonstrate conduct that reflects the responsibilities entrusted to them by citizens.
Indefinite Suspension Pending Investigation
Following deliberations, the Assembly resolved to place Agbor on indefinite suspension from all legislative duties while a formal investigation is carried out.
An ad hoc committee has been established to examine the allegations and present its findings to the House.
The committee’s report will determine the next legislative steps regarding the lawmaker’s future in the Assembly.
After the resolution was passed, Agbor was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms, in compliance with the Assembly’s directive.
Assembly Speaker Emphasises Discipline
The Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, said the Assembly remains committed to maintaining discipline, dignity, and public trust in the legislature.
He stressed that lawmakers must behave in a manner that protects the reputation of the institution.
Ayambem stated that the Assembly would not tolerate actions capable of bringing the legislature into disrepute and emphasised the importance of accountability among elected officials.
Governor and Wife React to Allegations
Earlier, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu and his wife Eyoanwan Otu criticised the alleged incident, describing the reported behaviour as irresponsible.
However, the lawmaker’s wife, Glory Agbor, later issued a statement appealing for privacy and saying the family had resolved the matter internally.
She stated that although disagreements had occurred, both parties had amicably settled their differences.
Glory Agbor also apologised to her husband and family and announced that she would withdraw from the Legislators’ Wives Association.
