Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly possessing an illegal firearm during a targeted intelligence operation aimed at curbing the spread of unlawful weapons in the state.
The suspect, identified as Dr Kingsley Dele, was apprehended by officers of the Command Intelligence and Rapid Response Squad (CIRRS) following credible intelligence about the illegal weapon.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the arrest occurred on February 28, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m. in Obaretin Community, Edo State.
During the operation, officers reportedly recovered a Beretta pistol, believed to have been unlawfully possessed by the suspect.
Intelligence-Led Operation Targets Illegal Arms
ASP Ikoedem explained that the operation forms part of the command’s ongoing crackdown on the proliferation of illegal firearms in Edo State, which authorities say often fuels violent crimes across communities.
She emphasized that the Edo State Police Command maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal weapon possession, regardless of the suspect’s background or profession.
According to the police spokesperson, the arrest was carried out through a swift and discreet intelligence-driven operation, leading to the successful recovery of the prohibited firearm.
Commissioner of Police Reaffirms Security Commitment
The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, reiterated the command’s determination to tackle criminal activities linked to illegal arms circulation.
He assured residents that the police remain proactive, vigilant, and committed to protecting lives and property across Edo communities.
The commissioner also urged members of the public to support law enforcement agencies by sharing timely and credible information that can help prevent crime and improve public safety.
Suspect to Face Court Charges
Police authorities confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue.
Upon completion of the investigation, Dr Kingsley Dele is expected to be charged in court for unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm.
The Edo State Police Command stated that it will continue intensifying operations to remove illegal weapons from circulation and strengthen community security.
