The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has begun an investigation into reports of illegal car racing and stunt driving allegedly carried out by some youths in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The alleged racing activities were said to have taken place around the National Mosque area, raising safety concerns among residents and road users.

According to the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the agency received several complaints from members of the public about suspicious racing activities in the area.

He described the development as dangerous, unlawful, and a serious threat to public road safety.

Ogungbemide explained that the FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, had directed the FRSC Sector Commander in the FCT, Felix Theman, to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a report for immediate action.

Residents Raise Alarm Over Dangerous Street Racing

The complaints reportedly came from residents who observed high-speed car racing and stunt driving around the National Mosque area, particularly during periods when traffic was lighter.

However, Ogungbemide noted that some of the reports received by the agency were not completely consistent or detailed.

Despite this, the FRSC decided to investigate the claims to determine whether illegal racing activities are actually taking place on Abuja’s public roads.

Illegal Car Racing Not Allowed on Nigerian Roads

The FRSC spokesperson emphasised that Formula One-style racing or any form of organised car racing is not permitted on public roads in Nigeria.

He warned that such activities endanger not only the drivers involved but also other motorists, pedestrians, and residents in nearby communities.

According to him, the FRSC has not granted permission to any group, organisation, or individual to conduct car racing or stunt driving on roads within the Federal Capital Territory.

FRSC Promises Action to Protect Road Users

Ogungbemide assured the public that once the investigation is completed, the FRSC will take appropriate enforcement actions in accordance with Nigeria’s traffic laws and road safety regulations.

He also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring safe roads across Nigeria and urged residents to continue providing credible information about dangerous driving activities.

The FRSC encouraged members of the public to report illegal racing, reckless driving, and stunt driving to authorities to help improve road safety in Abuja and across the country.
