The Kano State House of Assembly has officially begun impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam-Gwarzo, citing allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.

The move was announced during Thursday’s plenary session when the Majority Leader, Lawan Dala, presented a formal impeachment notice before lawmakers.

The notice was subsequently read by Speaker Ismail Falgore, marking the start of the constitutional process to determine the deputy governor’s political future.

According to the Assembly, the action is based on Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which empowers state legislatures to initiate impeachment proceedings against a governor or deputy governor accused of gross misconduct.

A total of 38 lawmakers signed the impeachment notice, indicating strong legislative backing for the move.

Following the presentation, Speaker Falgore directed that the notice be formally served on Abdulsalam-Gwarzo in compliance with constitutional procedures.

Political Tensions Behind the Impeachment Move

The impeachment attempt comes amid growing political tensions in Kano State after Governor Abba Yusuf defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last year.

While the governor switched parties, Deputy Governor Abdulsalam-Gwarzo refused to follow him, choosing instead to remain in the NNPP.

His decision reportedly widened the political rift within the Kano State government and created uncertainty about the stability of the administration.

Observers say the political disagreement may have played a role in the ongoing impeachment process, as divisions within the state leadership continue to deepen.

What Happens Next in the Impeachment Process?

Under Nigeria’s constitution, the deputy governor must be formally served with the impeachment notice and given an opportunity to respond to the allegations.

If the process proceeds, the Assembly may set up an investigative panel to examine the claims of misconduct.

The panel’s findings will determine whether the lawmakers can proceed with the final stage of the impeachment vote.

The development has sparked fresh debate across Kano’s political landscape, with many watching closely to see how the Kano Assembly impeachment process will unfold in the coming weeks.
