Six Aspirants Eye Kwara Governorship Seat as AbdulRazaq Promises Open 2027 Race

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman-AbdulRazaq

AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has dismissed claims that he has chosen a successor for the 2027 Kwara governorship election, insisting that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress will emerge through a transparent and competitive primary process.

Speaking during the party’s state congress in Ilorin, the governor said speculation about endorsing a candidate—especially from the Kwara North Senatorial District—was unfounded.

According to AbdulRazaq, the party is focused on strengthening democratic processes rather than building political dynasties.

“We are not here to build a dynasty; we are here to build a legacy,” the governor said.

“Whoever eventually succeeds will build on the foundation already laid and aim to achieve even greater progress for Kwara State.”

Six Aspirants Already in the Race

The governor revealed that six individuals have already indicated interest in contesting the APC governorship ticket ahead of 2027, including a member of the Kwara State House of Assembly.

He described the emerging contest as a healthy sign of internal democracy, noting that competition within the party will ultimately strengthen its chances in the election.

“When I speak of healthy competition, I mean it will be tough. Even from within our state House of Assembly, we already have six governorship aspirants,” AbdulRazaq said.

He urged aspirants and party leaders to maintain unity before and after the primaries, stressing that whoever emerges as the party’s candidate must work with other contestants to keep the party strong.

Call for Unity Within the APC

The governor emphasised the importance of party cohesion, warning that political divisions could weaken the party ahead of the next election cycle.

He said the peaceful conduct of the party’s congress demonstrated growing unity among APC members in Kwara State.

AbdulRazaq also claimed that opposition parties in the state have weakened significantly, pointing to recent defections from the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress to the ruling APC.

Highlighting Government Achievements

The governor further defended his administration’s performance over the past six years, highlighting investments in infrastructure, education, and healthcare across the state.

He said the progress recorded by the government has raised governance standards and will make it difficult for opposition parties to campaign effectively against the APC in future elections.

AbdulRazaq concluded that the next governor of Kwara State will be chosen through merit and party processes rather than political endorsement.
