Nigerian Army Major Killed as Troops Foil ISWAP Attacks in Borno State

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, successfully repelled coordinated attacks by suspected ISWAP fighters on Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in Mayanti, Gajigana, and Gajiram between February 28 and March 1, 2026.

Despite the heavy assaults, Nigerian forces retained full control of all positions.

According to Lt Col Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, five terrorists were killed at Mayanti, three at Gajiram, and two at Gajigana.

Tragically, a Nigerian Army major was also killed during the Mayanti encounter.
“The failed assaults underscore the growing desperation of terrorist elements under sustained pressure across their enclaves and logistics corridors,” Lt Col Uba said.

Recovered items from the attacks included PKT automatic anti-aircraft guns, RPG-7 tubes, AK-47 rifles, FN rifles, RPG bombs, and large quantities of ammunition.

Troops also captured specialized equipment at Gajiram, including an armed drone, anti-tank bombs, mortar bombs, and barbed wire cutters. At Gajigana, troops successfully maintained their base, repelling all threats.

Additional offensive operations in Kayawa Village, Bulturam Corner, and Dadingel in Gujba LGA forced terrorists to flee, leaving behind tricycles, motorcycles, bicycles, drugs, and medical consumables used for treating wounded insurgents.

Lt Col Uba confirmed that all locations remain firmly under military control.

The sustained offensive operations demonstrate the Nigerian Army’s resilience, battlefield dominance, and ongoing efforts to degrade ISWAP operational capacity in Borno State.
