National News – The Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) is advancing in its search for a new high-performance manager for the male senior national cricket team, the Yellow Greens, following the departure of former Kenya international, Steve Tikolo.
The recruitment drive, which began on February 2, has now reached the shortlisting stage, bringing the country closer to naming a successor.
Candidates were required to hold a Level 3 coaching qualification and possess between eight and ten years of coaching experience, reflecting the federation’s commitment to professional excellence.
According to NCF General Manager Emeka Igwilo, qualified applicants have been shortlisted, and the committee is preparing for interviews.
“Those who fulfilled the criteria applied. We have Nigerians and foreigners, but the selection will be based on experience and qualification.
We have a standard, and we can’t go below that. It is up to the committee to recommend based on the pedigree of those who have applied,” Igwilo explained.
The successful candidate will take on the responsibility of guiding not only the Yellow Greens but also other national cricket teams in Nigeria.
The role demands candidates with exposure to high-performance or international cricket environments, proven success in elite player development, and expertise in modern cricket methodologies, including performance analytics, sports science, and conditioning.
Experience in associate or emerging cricket nations, as well as with countries holding ODI status, is an added advantage.
Former coaches include South Africa’s Sean Phillips (2011–2012) and Sri Lanka’s Asanka Gurusinha (2020–2022), making Tikolo the third foreigner to lead the national side.
Whether the next appointment will be a Nigerian coach remains to be seen, but the federation insists that the selection will prioritize merit and professional pedigree.
The NCF aims to ensure that Nigeria maintains a competitive edge on the international cricket stage while providing a structured performance pathway for upcoming talent.
This strategic appointment is expected to significantly impact player development, high-performance management, and the overall growth of cricket in the country.
