The National Police Council has officially endorsed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following a unanimous decision.
The announcement was confirmed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, after the council convened at the State House, Abuja.
The council meeting, which lasted approximately 40 minutes, complied with the Police Act 2020 requirements for formal consideration of IGP appointments.
President Tinubu, who chairs the council, alongside all 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and other key officials, deliberated on Disu’s confirmation.
Following the approval, Disu’s appointment will now be transmitted to the Nigerian Senate for final confirmation.
This comes after the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun last week, officially citing family reasons.
However, reports suggest that Egbetokun was asked to step down during a meeting at the Presidential Villa.
Attendees of the council meeting included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and several state governors.
Ministers for Police Affairs, Interior, and the Federal Capital Territory were also present.
Olatunji Disu, 59, has served as acting IGP since his appointment following Egbetokun’s exit.
His leadership and extensive experience in Nigeria’s police force have been widely recognized, positioning him as a stabilizing figure for the national security landscape.
The Police Council’s swift endorsement reflects a commitment to continuity and institutional stability within Nigeria’s security framework.
Disu’s confirmation is expected to enhance operational efficiency, strengthen law enforcement, and provide strategic direction across the nation.
