Nigerian Athletes Dominate 2026 NCAA Indoor Conference Championships With 32 Medals

Nigerian student-athletes delivered an extraordinary performance at the 2026 NCAA Indoor Conference Championships, winning 32 medals across multiple conferences in the United States and reinforcing Nigeria’s growing dominance in collegiate athletics.

Competing across major leagues including the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, and several other conferences, the athletes recorded numerous podium finishes, personal bests, and historic records during the indoor season finale.

One of the standout performances came from Samuel Ogazi, who produced a sensational run in the men’s 400m at the SEC Championships.

The Alabama athlete clocked 44.72 seconds, setting a new African indoor record and Nigerian national record, narrowly surpassing the previous mark of 44.74 seconds.

Another impressive result came from Ella Onojuvwevwo, who won the women’s 400m SEC title with a personal best time of 50.96 seconds, becoming the second-fastest African woman in indoor history over the distance.

Nigeria also celebrated sprint success in the men’s 60m, where Kayinsola Ajayi claimed gold with 6.45 seconds, breaking a Nigerian national record that had stood since 1999.

His time also equaled the NCAA all-time record for the event. Fellow Nigerian Israel Okon added a bronze medal with a time of 6.54 seconds.

At the Big Ten Championships, Nigerian athletes continued their strong showing.

Chioma Nwachukwu won silver in the women’s 400m with a lifetime best of 51.67 seconds, while Princess Uche secured bronze in the women’s 600m.

Field events also saw success as Emmanuel Njoku claimed silver in the long jump with 7.86m, and Chidozie Kalu earned silver in the triple jump.

In the Big 12 Conference, Temitope Adeshina won gold in the women’s high jump after clearing 1.96m, while Success Umukoro captured silver in the women’s 60m.

Across other conferences, Nigerian athletes such as Prestina Ochonogor, Kelly Ufodiama, Blessing Akintoye, Favour Onyah, and Praise Djoma added several medals in sprint and field events, contributing to the historic tally.

With the conference championships concluded, attention now turns to the NCAA Indoor National Championships scheduled for March 13–14, where many Nigerian athletes are expected to compete for national titles.

The impressive medal haul highlights the rising global impact of Nigerian athletes in collegiate track and field, raising expectations for future international competitions and Olympic appearances.
