Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have shot a farmer and abducted his wife during a late-night attack in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, raising fresh concerns about security in farming communities.

The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday in the Isagba community along Oda Road in Akure, according to the Nigeria Police Force.

Police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh confirmed the attack in a statement on Thursday, explaining that the victims were targeted at their residence.

The farmer, identified as Adesida Daniel, reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to his right hand while attempting to resist the attackers as they abducted his wife.

According to police authorities, the gunmen stormed the residence in the quiet farming community and carried out the abduction before fleeing the area.

“Police operatives responded immediately after receiving a distress call,” Jimoh said. “The injured victim was rescued and taken to the Police Clinic for urgent medical treatment while officers secured the area.”

Security operatives have since launched a manhunt for the suspected kidnappers.

The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State has ordered intensified patrols, intelligence gathering, and bush-combing operations across the affected community and neighbouring areas.

Authorities say the operation aims to track down the perpetrators and rescue the kidnapped woman safely.

Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or unfamiliar individuals to the nearest police station.

The latest incident highlights growing security concerns across parts of Ondo State, particularly in rural areas where farmers and residents have increasingly been targeted by criminal gangs.

Over the past few years, kidnapping and violent attacks have been reported along remote roads and farming settlements in the state.

Security agencies have repeatedly intensified patrols and surveillance operations following such attacks, but residents continue to call for stronger security measures to protect communities and agricultural workers.

As investigations continue, authorities have assured the public that every effort will be made to apprehend those responsible and restore safety in the affected areas.
