Former Nigerian lawmaker Shina Peller has emphasised the importance of a strong opposition in safeguarding democracy in Nigeria.
According to him, an effective opposition is essential for maintaining balance, accountability, and transparency in the nation’s political system.
Peller, who previously represented the Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, made the remarks during a Ramadan lecture in Abuja.
In a statement he personally signed, the politician stressed that the survival of opposition parties goes beyond partisan politics and directly affects the health of Nigeria’s democracy.
Why a Strong Opposition Is Important for Democracy
Speaking about the current challenges facing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peller noted that the issue should not only be viewed from the perspective of party survival.
Instead, he said it should be seen as a matter of protecting democratic balance in Nigeria.
According to him, democracy functions best when opposing voices exist to question government decisions and ensure accountability.
Peller also criticised some politicians who, despite benefiting from the PDP in the past, are now working against the party’s stability.
He warned that such actions could weaken the opposition and ultimately harm the country’s democratic structure.
Call for Integrity in the Judiciary
Beyond party politics, Peller urged members of the judiciary to remain fair and uphold justice at all times.
He described the judicial system as a vital pillar of democracy and reminded judges of their responsibility to act with integrity.
He also called on political leaders and public officials to reflect on their actions, reminding them that positions of power, wealth, and influence are temporary.
Investing in Youth and Community Development
During the lecture, Islamic scholar Jamiu Ajadi Sanusi encouraged Nigerians to prioritise human development, particularly among young people.
He emphasised that building communities and investing in youth empowerment are key steps toward securing a stronger future for the country.
Opposition Parties Facing Internal Challenges
Political analysts have raised concerns about ongoing internal conflicts within several opposition parties in Nigeria.
Leadership disputes, factional divisions, and legal battles have weakened party structures and created uncertainty about their effectiveness.
Both the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress are currently dealing with internal disagreements over leadership and party direction.
Observers say resolving these issues will be critical if opposition parties hope to play a meaningful role in Nigeria’s democratic development.
