President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo as he marks his 89th birthday, praising the elder statesman for his enduring impact on Nigeria, Africa, and the global political landscape.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Obasanjo as a respected national leader whose influence continues to shape Nigeria’s development and democratic journey.

The President noted that Obasanjo’s decades of service and leadership have played a crucial role in strengthening Nigeria’s political stability and international reputation.

Tinubu highlighted the former leader’s historic role in Nigeria’s governance, recalling that Obasanjo first served as military Head of State from 1976 to 1979, when he oversaw a transition that returned the country to civilian rule.

Years later, he returned as Nigeria’s democratically elected president, leading the country from 1999 to 2007 during the Fourth Republic.

According to the President, Obasanjo’s leadership has been marked by courage, patriotism, and a commitment to national unity.

He also recognised the former president’s role in defending Nigeria during the civil war and his dedication to promoting Africa’s political and economic interests on the global stage.

Tinubu further commended Obasanjo’s continued contributions to public discourse through books, speeches, and regular interventions on national issues.

“Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s wisdom, experience, and unwavering commitment to nation-building remain invaluable to Nigeria and Africa,” the statement noted.

The President added that Obasanjo’s insights and perspectives have consistently contributed to discussions on governance, democracy, and economic development in Nigeria.

As the former leader celebrates another milestone, Tinubu prayed for continued strength, good health, and wisdom for the elder statesman.

He expressed hope that Obasanjo would continue to offer guidance and inspiration to future generations of Nigerian leaders.

Obasanjo, one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures, remains widely respected for his role in shaping the country’s democratic institutions and promoting peace and development across Africa.
