President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to formally swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on Wednesday following his unanimous endorsement by the Nigeria Police Council.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The decision was reached during a Nigeria Police Council meeting chaired by President Tinubu and attended by key national leaders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu.

Several state governors and top government officials also participated in the meeting, expressing strong support for Disu’s appointment as the head of the Nigeria Police Force.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s career achievements, particularly his leadership of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021.

During that period, Disu gained national recognition for strengthening crime control and improving rapid security responses.

Similarly, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule described the appointment as a well-deserved recognition of Disu’s outstanding service record and leadership capabilities within the police force.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike also commended Disu’s professionalism, recalling his tenure in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police overseeing the Criminal Investigation Department and anti-kidnapping operations between 2014 and 2015.

Wike further highlighted Disu’s recent service as Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory command, noting that his leadership significantly improved security coordination and crime-fighting efforts in Abuja.

Disu’s confirmation comes just days after President Tinubu appointed him Acting Inspector-General of Police following the resignation of former police chief Kayode Egbetokun.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.

Over the years, he has earned several professional qualifications in criminology, forensic investigation, public administration, security studies, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship.

Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.

Like his predecessor, Disu also worked closely with Tinubu during the President’s tenure as Lagos State governor from 1999 to 2007, further strengthening his long-standing experience in Nigeria’s security administration.
