Tinubu Swears In Olatunji Disu as Substantive Inspector-General of Police

Acting IG, Olatunji Disu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) during a ceremony held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Council Chambers shortly before the Federal Executive Council meeting.

Disu took the oath of office at about 2:53 pm after his citation was read by the State House Director of Information and Public Relations.

Senior government officials and dignitaries attended the event, including Kashim Shettima, ministers, and top security chiefs.

Disu’s confirmation as Nigeria’s new police chief followed the unanimous endorsement of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council earlier in the week.

His appointment came shortly after the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down on February 23, 2026.

Career background of Olatunji Disu

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.

Over the years, he built a reputation as a seasoned officer with extensive experience in policing, crime investigation, and public administration.

Before becoming IGP, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.

Disu gained national recognition during his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he was credited with strengthening crime control and security operations in the state.

Praise from political leaders

Several political leaders commended the appointment during the Police Council meeting.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, praised Disu’s professionalism and leadership, citing his impressive track record in crime fighting.

Similarly, Abdullahi Sule, Governor of Nasarawa State, described the appointment as a merit-based decision grounded in Disu’s strong service record.

Mandate for reform

During Disu’s earlier decoration as acting IGP, President Tinubu urged him to strengthen discipline within the police, improve cooperation among security agencies, and restore public confidence in law enforcement.

In response, the new police chief pledged to end impunity within the force and enforce a strict zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and human rights violations.
