Scene of the accident

A tragic road accident in Epe, Lagos State, has left one person dead and three others seriously injured after a yam-laden truck crashed into a commercial tricycle at Aiyetoro Junction.

The fatal incident occurred on Sunday along the busy traffic light corridor in Epe, when the truck reportedly lost control while attempting a U-turn toward Eleko.

According to officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the truck, bearing registration number AGL 764 XB, was travelling from Ijebu-Ode before the driver attempted the manoeuvre.

During the turn, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to slam into a stationary commercial tricycle with registration number SMK 127 QR waiting at the junction.

The impact of the collision was severe.

Officials confirmed that one occupant died instantly, while three others sustained critical injuries.

Emergency Responders Rescue Victims

LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq explained that traffic officers on routine duty in the area responded immediately after the crash.

Emergency teams from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and military personnel quickly arrived at the scene.

Rescue workers extricated the injured victims from the wreckage before transporting them to General Hospital Epe for urgent medical treatment.

The body of the deceased was also taken to the hospital for necessary procedures.

Security agencies maintained order at the scene while traffic officials cleared the wreckage and restored normal traffic flow along the busy Epe corridor.

LASTMA Calls for Investigation

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a quick recovery.

He also urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.

Authorities say anyone found responsible for the crash will face appropriate legal consequences under Nigerian traffic laws.

Road safety experts continue to warn that reckless driving, poor vehicle control, and dangerous U-turns remain major causes of traffic accidents in Lagos, especially along busy highways and junctions like those in Epe.
