National News – The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has revealed that it monitored projects valued at over N21.23 trillion under the Federal Ministry of Works to prevent corruption and enhance accountability in public spending.
Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), ICPC Chairman, announced this on Thursday in Abuja during a workshop with the Nigerian Union of Journalists themed, “Reinvigorating the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (2022–2026): A Post-Assessment Roadmap for the Fourth Estate.”
Aliyu explained that the commission prioritizes preventive oversight of public expenditure through its Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Initiative.
In recent phases, the ICPC monitored roughly 950 projects across 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory, valued at approximately N415.25 billion.
The exercise exposed abandoned and underperforming projects, compelled contractors to resume work, and strengthened accountability in public service delivery.
“The commission ensures that public funds translate into tangible outcomes for citizens.
Tracking projects under the Federal Ministry of Works, valued at over N21.23 trillion, reflects the scale of our preventive oversight responsibilities,” Aliyu stated.
He emphasized that such initiatives prevent corruption before it occurs, ensuring value for money and transparency.
Aliyu also highlighted the vital role of the media in anti-corruption efforts, calling journalists “critical partners” in promoting accountability.
He urged them to deepen investigative reporting, foster responsible journalism, and support reforms that reinforce transparency.
The ICPC’s engagement aims to generate ideas, strengthen collaboration, and provide actionable contributions for the next phase of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy.
The workshop is part of the ICPC’s ongoing effort to enhance cooperation with the press, raising public awareness and reinforcing transparency in governance.
The commission’s initiative underscores the importance of combined media and government oversight to curb corruption, monitor mega-projects, and ensure that citizens benefit from public investments.
