National News – Iran has reportedly fired two ballistic missiles toward a joint United States–United Kingdom military facility located on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, according to U.S. officials cited by The Wall Street Journal.

The attempted strike did not hit the target, but it has raised concerns among Western security analysts about Iran’s growing long-range missile capabilities.

The military installation on Diego Garcia, part of the Chagos Islands, is one of the most strategic bases used by the United States for operations in Asia and the Middle East.

Reports indicate that both missiles launched by Iran failed to reach the base.

One reportedly malfunctioned during flight, while the other was intercepted after a U.S. warship launched a defensive missile system.

Pentagon officials declined to comment on the incident when contacted by journalists, but defence experts say the attempted strike signals a potential escalation in tensions between Iran and Western allies.

Security analysts believe the missile launch is significant because Diego Garcia lies roughly 2,500 miles (about 4,000 kilometres) from Iranian territory.

If confirmed, the development suggests Tehran possesses ballistic missiles capable of travelling much farther than previously believed.

The Diego Garcia base has long served as a critical logistics and operations hub for the United States military.

It has been used in several major campaigns, including bombing missions during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The base currently hosts American bombers and other strategic military equipment.

Britain administers the Chagos Islands but has agreed to return the territory to Mauritius after decades of control dating back to the 1960s.

Despite the planned transfer, the United Kingdom maintains a lease arrangement that allows the United States to continue operating the military facility on Diego Garcia.

The political decision to return the islands has drawn criticism in some Western political circles.

U.S. President Donald Trump has previously condemned the move, arguing that the base remains vital to Western military operations and regional security.

While the reported missile launches caused no damage, the incident highlights rising geopolitical tensions and increasing concerns about missile capabilities in the Middle East.
