Iranian Nobel Peace Winner Narges Mohammadi Sentenced to Six Years Behind Bars

An Iranian court has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to six years in prison, her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, confirmed to AFP on Sunday.

“She has been sentenced to six years in prison for gathering and collusion to commit crimes,” Nili said, adding that Mohammadi also received a two-year ban on leaving Iran.

Additionally, she was handed a 1.5-year sentence for propaganda activities and two years of exile in Khosf, located in South Khorasan province. Under Iranian law, prison terms run concurrently.

Nili expressed hope that Mohammadi could be temporarily released on bail for medical treatment due to ongoing health issues. He also noted that the court’s decision is not final and can be appealed.

Over the last 25 years, the 53-year-old activist has repeatedly been tried and imprisoned for opposing Iran’s death penalty and advocating against the mandatory dress code for women.

Mohammadi has spent much of the past decade in prison and has not seen her twin children, who live in Paris, since 2015.

In December 2024, she was briefly released for three weeks on medical grounds, following a tumor removal and bone graft procedure, her lawyer said. Despite incarceration, Mohammadi has continued to stage protests and hunger strikes in prison.

Mohammadi received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her relentless campaigning against Iran’s death penalty. Her children accepted the award on her behalf, as she remained behind bars.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, report that Iran executes more people each year than any country except China, highlighting ongoing concerns over the country’s use of capital punishment.
