Iyabo Ojo Explains Viral FAAN Campaign: “I Did It for Free, Not Politics”

Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has addressed the controversy surrounding her recent viral video praising the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), insisting that the promotion was voluntary and not politically motivated.

The video, which circulated widely online last week, showcased the actress applauding improvements at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, including renovations at Terminal 1, enhanced comfort at Terminal 2, and the efficiency of the airport’s Protocol Team. The clip sparked mixed reactions on social media, given Ojo’s previous political stances.

In the Instagram post accompanying the video, Ojo wrote:

“FAAN is changing for the better in so many ways. Besides the renovation of MMIA Lagos Terminal 1 and the beauty & comfort of Terminal 2, the service of their Protocol Team is exceptional. I’m so proud of my country.”

Some users questioned why the actress, known for her criticism of the APC government during the 2020 EndSARS protests and support for Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, appeared to be promoting a federal agency under the current administration.

FAAN Confirms No Payment or Ambassadorship

FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku clarified that Ojo was not appointed as a brand ambassador and received no payment for the video.

“Iyabo Ojo was not ‘awarded a gig’ by FAAN, nor is she an Ambassador. She was only asked to raise awareness on transformational initiatives at the airport while shooting a movie scene. There was no financial incentive,” Kuku stated on her verified X account.

Iyabo Ojo Speaks on Motivation

Responding to the backlash, Ojo explained her reasons on Instagram:

“I’m Nigerian. And I’m a voice. When I see progress — airports upgraded, roads rebuilt, systems improved — I shout it from the rooftops, if need be, not because I’m paid, not because I’m political, but because I feel it and I want good for my country.”

The actress revealed that her movie shoot at the airport coincided with FAAN’s request for her to highlight visible improvements:

“FAAN approached me: You’ve seen the changes, please help us spread the word. So I did. FOR FREE. No fee. No contract. Just love for Nigeria.”

She emphasized that her praise is for good initiatives, not government affiliations:

“I praise GOOD — not government, and if the government does good, I’ll praise them too. My loyalty? To my country. Always.”

Ojo concluded by saying she remains open to collaborations with any political party or organization focused on national development:

“I’ll work with any political party — as long as it’s about building a better tomorrow for our dear nation. No hate. No agenda. Just hands joined.”
