The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of seven persons and injuries to 70 others following a lone road traffic accident in Kano State.
The crash, which involved a commercial DAF trailer conveying passengers and goods, occurred at about 8:35 a.m. on Sunday along Hadejia Road, Kwanar Danja, according to the FRSC.
The Sector Commander, Idris Muhammed-Lawal, disclosed the details in a statement signed by the Corps’ Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, in Kano.
Muhammed-Lawal said the FRSC received a distress call at 8:35 a.m. and deployed a rescue team to the scene within five minutes, arriving at about 8:40 a.m.
According to the statement, the accident involved 105 persons, out of which seven lost their lives, 70 sustained varying degrees of injuries, while 28 persons escaped unhurt.
He explained that preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was caused by speeding and loss of control, compounded by the dangerous practice of conveying passengers alongside goods.
“The incident was a single-vehicle fatal crash, and the road condition was observed to be good. No items were recovered at the scene,” the sector commander stated.
The injured victims were immediately evacuated to various hospitals across Kano, including:
Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, Gezawa: 24 victims (17 males, 7 females)
General Hospital, Gezawa: 24 victims (16 males, 8 females)
Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital: 20 victims (all males)
Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nasarawa: 7 victims (5 males, 2 females)
Muhammed-Lawal expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
He warned motorists—particularly commercial vehicle operators—against speeding, reckless driving, and the illegal conveyance of passengers in goods vehicles, noting that such practices continue to result in avoidable road fatalities in Nigeria.
The FRSC also urged road users to remain safety-conscious and to comply strictly with traffic regulations to protect lives and property.
