The Agege Local Government Area in Lagos has unveiled a free cooking gas refill programme aimed at supporting 4,000 residents across its seven wards, as part of efforts to cushion the effects of rising energy costs.
Chairman Abdulganiyu Obasa announced the initiative in a post shared on X, stating that beneficiaries will receive a free 3kg LPG refill. According to him, the intervention is designed to provide “immediate, practical relief at the grassroots” amid increasing cooking gas prices and broader economic pressure on households.
Obasa explained that the 4,000 slots have been fairly distributed across all seven wards in Agege to ensure inclusiveness. Designated gas stations have also been assigned to make the process accessible and orderly for residents.
How the Agege Free Gas Refill Programme Works
The Lagos free LPG refill scheme will operate on a first-come, first-served basis, the council confirmed. Residents must present their personal gas cylinders to qualify for the refill. Officials noted that once the allocated slots for any ward are exhausted, the exercise will conclude in that area.
The council chairman maintained that the programme is part of broader people-focused policies aimed at improving quality of life, encouraging cleaner energy adoption, and ensuring governance delivers tangible benefits directly to communities.
Mixed Reactions Over Sustainability
While many residents have welcomed the Agege 3kg cooking gas refill initiative as timely support, the announcement has also generated mixed reactions online. Some critics questioned the sustainability and long-term economic impact of palliative measures, suggesting that empowerment programmes and job creation would offer more lasting solutions.
As of the time of filing this report, Obasa has yet to publicly respond to the criticisms surrounding the scheme.
