A major fire outbreak at the old Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos led to the rescue of 18 people, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, prompting an emergency response after a distress call was received at 15:52 hours.
Firefighters from Isolo, Bolade, Ikeja, and Alausa headquarters were immediately deployed in coordination with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and other federal and state emergency agencies.
Fire Originated in Airport IT Server Room
The Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that the fire started in the IT Server Room located within the E-Wing of the Departure Lounge.
The blaze also affected the adjoining Radio Communication Room.
According to officials, the structure—currently undergoing reconstruction—made it initially difficult to access the seat of the fire.
However, coordinated multi-agency efforts ensured the flames were contained before spreading to other sections of the airport terminal. The fire was fully extinguished at 23:24 hours.
18 People Rescued, Flights Temporarily Disrupted
All 12 personnel stationed in the Control Tower were safely evacuated. Six additional individuals sustained injuries but were reported to be in stable condition after rescue.
The airport fire caused significant disruption to flight operations, stranding passengers and leading to the diversion of some international flights.
Thick smoke billowed from the old terminal for several hours as emergency responders battled the blaze.
Authorities later confirmed that flight operations have resumed, with activities temporarily relocated to the New Terminal.
The Old Terminal 1 remains closed pending further structural assessment and safety clearance.
Investigations into the cause of the Lagos airport fire are ongoing, with officials promising a detailed report upon completion.
