The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced a 13 percent increase in Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and standard route fares across Lagos State. The new fare structure will take effect from Monday, March 2, 2026.
According to LAMATA, the fare adjustment falls under the state’s Bus Reform Initiative and follows concerns raised by transport operators over rising operational costs.
Inflation, fuel prices, vehicle maintenance, and other economic pressures were cited as major reasons for the review.
LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, explained that the increase aligns with the state’s annual fare review mechanism.
He referenced data from the National Bureau of Statistics showing Nigeria’s headline inflation at 15.15 percent in December 2025 and about 15.1 percent in January 2026, adding that these figures continue to strain public transport operations.
