The Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, has highlighted the pivotal role of sports in the holistic development of students. Speaking at Dowen College’s 24th Annual Inter-House Sports Competition, Ogunlende described school sports as a vital platform for instilling discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills in young people.
Held at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Lagos, the event attracted students, parents, alumni, and education stakeholders, showcasing the enduring value of school sports in youth development.
“I am truly proud of the sportsmanship displayed by these young champions and their dedication to excellence. This event reinforces the importance of investing in sports as a tool for nurturing well-rounded future leaders,” Ogunlende said.
Celebrating Teamwork, Excellence, and Resilience
In her welcome address, Dr. Adebisi Layiwola, Principal and Head of Dowen College, emphasized that the annual sports competition celebrates teamwork, resilience, and the spirit of healthy competition. She stated:
“Sports teach discipline, resilience, and determination, shaping character while instilling values of fairness, respect, and perseverance.”
Dr. Layiwola also commended Commissioner Ogunlende for supporting youth development initiatives in Lagos State and acknowledged the contributions of parents, alumni, and the school’s Sports Ambassador, Dr. Adewale Teluwo, for inspiring younger generations through grassroots sports programs.
Top Performers and Competition Highlights
The competition concluded with Topaz House emerging overall winners, securing 26 gold, 19 silver, and 21 bronze medals. Sapphire House came second, Emerald House third, and Ruby House fourth.
The event featured track and field events, as well as novelty games, further highlighting the role of sports in fostering healthy competition, camaraderie, and holistic student growth.
“True victory lies in the effort, teamwork, and memories created,” Dr. Layiwola reminded students during her address.
