National News – Kylian Mbappé moved within touching distance of becoming France’s all-time leading goalscorer after netting in an international friendly victory against Brazil national football team at Gillette Stadium.
The goal brought the French forward to 56 international goals, just one shy of the long-standing record of 57 set by Olivier Giroud.
Mbappé, who plays for France national football team and Spanish giants Real Madrid CF, scored in the 32nd minute after receiving a precise through pass from Ousmane Dembélé.
The striker calmly lifted the ball over Brazil goalkeeper Ederson, giving France an early advantage during the international friendly encounter.
The match, played on Friday, marked Mbappé’s return to France’s starting lineup after recovering from a knee injury sustained during club duties with Real Madrid.
Despite the injury layoff, the 27-year-old forward displayed impressive sharpness and attacking intent throughout the first half, creating multiple scoring opportunities and testing Brazil’s defence.
France faced a setback in the second half when defender Dayot Upamecano received a red card for a last-man foul on Brazilian full-back Wesley França just outside the penalty area.
The dismissal left the French side with 10 players, increasing the pressure on coach Didier Deschamps and his squad.
However, France managed the situation effectively and doubled their lead in the 65th minute when Hugo Ekitiké scored from close range with a delicate chipped finish.
The goal sealed the victory and highlighted the depth and resilience within the French squad.
Mbappé was substituted in the 66th minute for Marcus Thuram after an impressive performance that kept fans focused on his historic milestone.
With 56 goals in 95 appearances for France, Mbappé now stands just one goal away from surpassing Giroud’s record and becoming the country’s all-time top scorer.
Football analysts believe it is only a matter of time before the prolific striker reaches the historic mark.
