Mirabel: How Viral False Rape Allegation Sparked Donations and Legal Trouble

Abigail Nsuka, popularly known as Mirabel, has landed in police custody after admitting that her viral rape allegation was fabricated. The TikToker had claimed in an emotional video that she was attacked in her apartment on February 15, triggering nationwide outrage and calls for justice.

The disturbing account quickly gained traction, amassing millions of views across social media platforms. Nigerian singer Simi and other influencers amplified her story, while advocacy bodies including the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency indicated interest in ensuring justice was served.

Donations Flood In After Viral Appeal

As public sympathy grew, so did financial support. Social media personality VeryDarkMan disclosed he transferred N100,000 to Mirabel, while other donors reportedly sent amounts ranging from N100,000 to N300,000. Online commentators alleged she may have received between N1 million and N5 million before scrutiny intensified.

However, inconsistencies in her narrative soon emerged. Some social media users questioned the authenticity of text messages she attributed to her alleged attacker, pointing to similarities in writing style. A recorded conversation later surfaced in which Mirabel allegedly confessed to staging the story and creating a separate account to send herself threatening messages.

Ogun Police Probe and Cybercrime Charges

Mirabel is currently in the custody of the Ogun State Police Command. Legal experts say she could face prosecution under Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015, which prescribes up to three years’ imprisonment, a N7 million fine, or both, for knowingly spreading false information online.

The case has sparked widespread debate about false rape allegations, social media accountability, and the potential harm such claims pose to genuine survivors seeking justice.
