Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Demands Probe into Alleged Attack on Peter Obi, Odigie-Oyegun

The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has called on security agencies to urgently investigate the alleged attack on former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, in Edo State.

In a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, Akpoti-Uduaghan described the reported incident as “deeply disturbing” and warned that escalating political hostility could threaten Nigeria’s democratic stability.

Rising Political Tensions in Edo State

According to reports, Obi and Odigie-Oyegun were allegedly attacked by suspected thugs in Benin, Edo State, during political activities linked to the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Though details remain unclear, photos and videos circulating online showed damaged vehicles and visible destruction at a private residence.

The Kogi Central lawmaker condemned what she termed a growing culture of political intolerance, stressing that democracy must not be undermined by violence, intimidation, or threats.

“Politics must never descend into violence. Democracy thrives on healthy competition, free expression, and respect for dissenting voices,” she stated.

Call for Security Investigation and Accountability

Akpoti-Uduaghan urged security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the alleged assassination attempt.

She emphasized that all political actors — regardless of party affiliation — deserve protection under the law.

She also cautioned against overzealous supporters who may resort to aggression in a bid to demonstrate loyalty to political leaders, warning that such actions are reckless and dangerous to national unity.

Reaffirming her commitment to democratic principles, the senator insisted that political differences in Nigeria must be resolved through dialogue and the ballot box — not violence.

The incident has intensified concerns over opposition safety and political security as alignments and preparations quietly gather momentum ahead of future electoral contests.
