Becoming a King Won’t End My Showbiz Career — Okey Bakassi

Veteran Nigerian actor, comedian, and newly crowned traditional ruler of Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Imo State, Okechukwu Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, speaks about balancing his entertainment career with royal duties.

From Hobby to Lifelong Passion

Bakassi’s journey began as a university hobby. “Comedy is just one part of what I do. I call myself an entertainer — acting, stand-up, public speaking,” he explains. Moving to Lagos for youth service, he had to choose between a conventional job and entertainment. Passion won. “Entertainment demanded full commitment, and it gave me happiness,” he says.

Childhood Roots of Humor

Raised in a military household, Bakassi grew up amid discipline, storytelling, and laughter. “Life in the barracks was like a mini Nigeria — full of stories, accents, and humour,” he recalls. Though he once wanted to be a military doctor and studied engineering, life led him to show business.

Breakthrough and Reinvention

Arriving in Lagos with nothing, he faced hardships, including homelessness. His career breakthrough came with “Night of a Thousand Laughs”, a platform he co-created that unified comedians nationwide. When acting opportunities slowed, Bakassi pivoted to stand-up, which became his most creative and lucrative platform. “Stand-up is the toughest art form — it’s just you, a mic, and the audience,” he notes.

Royal Duties and Community Impact

Crowned Okwe II of Umuihuocha, Bakassi sees the role as a chance to uplift his community, not a retirement. “Every stage of life brings responsibilities. This is just another phase,” he says, emphasizing that meaningful work continues alongside royalty.

Family, Legacy, and Advice

Married for over 25 years, Bakassi credits intentionality for a lasting union. He instills family values in his children, believing a strong household underpins leadership. He urges government support for creatives and encourages healthy competition in entertainment.

Life Beyond the Spotlight

Bakassi relaxes with football, movies, and reading while continuing as an MC and entertainer. “Becoming a king does not mean retiring from meaningful work,” he affirms.
