National News – The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has assured residents of a transparent, free and credible local government election scheduled for December 29, 2026, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The commission’s chairman, Babatunde Adeniyi, gave the assurance on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel led by its chairman, Yinka Adeniran.
Adeniyi said the commission had begun preparations for the local government and councillorship elections, stressing that OYSIEC would strictly follow electoral laws and guidelines to ensure the process remains transparent and credible.
According to him, the electoral body is committed to conducting an election outcome that will be acceptable to political parties, stakeholders and the people of the state.
Explaining why the commission is engaging stakeholders early, Adeniyi said collaboration with the media and political parties is essential to achieving a successful election.
He noted that voter apathy has often affected local government elections in the state, adding that OYSIEC would intensify public awareness and engagement to encourage wider participation.
The OYSIEC chairman also commended journalists for their role in strengthening democracy through balanced and responsible reporting.
He described the media as a vital bridge between government institutions and citizens, stating that accurate coverage of the electoral process would improve transparency and public trust.
Also speaking during the visit, OYSIEC Commissioner Remi Ayoade called on political parties in the state to actively participate in the upcoming polls.
He emphasised that inclusive participation would help strengthen grassroots democracy and ensure the legitimacy of local governance.
Earlier, Adeniran described Adeniyi as a seasoned labour leader and advocate for the welfare of ordinary citizens.
He expressed confidence in the commission’s ability to organise a credible election that will deepen democratic governance at the grassroots level in Oyo State.
The local government elections, scheduled for December 29, 2026, will determine leadership positions across councils in the state.
OYSIEC said preparations are already underway to ensure compliance with electoral regulations, proper voter education and a smooth voting process across all participating local governments.
